I am so impressed by this bookPorch Swing Girl is told from the point of view of sixteen year old Olive Galloway Olive’s voice is so strong Olive is angry Snarky Sarcastic Stubborn Sad Olive is realistic and relatable She’s determined sometimes to a fault Olive is also generous kind and caring She’s a really awesome characterOlive is a Christian but her faith is wavering after the death of her mother She finds herself surrounded by many devout believers who remind her to turn to God even when she doesn’t want to even when things look bleak The faith sharing is strong I liked itThere’s a whisper of romance woven through the pages It’s sweet and innocent based on friendship and most importantly God’s will firstI couldn’t put this book down Porch Swing Girl is a refreshing and totally engaging read Taylor Bennett has a ton of natural talent I’m excited to see where her career goesPorch Swing Girl and its seuel Sand Castle Dreams are both available now Visit wwwchristianbookcom for details The third book in this series releases in April 2020 I borrowed a copy of this book from my local public library A review was not reuested or reuired All opinions expressed are completely my own read & download Û eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Ü Taylor Bennett

WRITING STYLE 5 STARSLookout YA Fiction World Taylor Bennett is one talented wordsmith Taylor might be a teen author but that doesn’t make her debut offering any less professional In fact her writing style is far polished and creative than books I’ve read from authors triple her age The fact that she’s only seventeen and can write witty vivid snappy YA ish sentances makes me excited for her future This book embodies everything you’d expect light YA Christian fiction to be It’s simple light hearted and painted with word pictures of imagery just as vivid as Hawaiian sunsets OVERALL STORY LINE 4 STARS Olive Galloway isn’t a character I could particularly relate with but I think Taylor did a good job on having her grow toward the end of the book Since this is a series I’m sure Olive’s character will continue to develop and draw closer to the Lord in books to come so those who are concerned about Olive being a strait up brat well she is So many Christian fiction authors are terrified to write “imperfect” characters so I think it’s interesting Taylor decided to tackle a “struggling snooty self centered teen” Even if she drove me nuts There were many times I wanted to smack that girl in the face but I think it was intended to be that way We learn that Olive is fresh out of a tragic past and her shallow relationship with God has completely fallen apart As the story progresses Olive must choose between selfishness and selflessness and decide if she’s going to place friendship at a higher priority than her current all consuming goal The story pacing felt pretty slow at times but I maybe it was just those relaxed Hawaii vibes I kinda wish I wouldn’t have known the end before starting the book there’s a major spoiler on the back of the book so for me that took away some of the enjoyment as far as the storyline goes FAITH CONTENT 3 Stars As I mentioned above Olive’s relationship with God is a mess She blames Him for her mother’s death and is irritated with any encouragement Gramma or Brander try to offer The faith content in this book is very light as is most YA Christian fic these days Olive slowly comes around but only taking baby steps toward God Like I said this is a series so hopefully we’ll see her relationship deepen in books to comeUESTIONABLE CONTENTNone It’s very clean appropriate for ages 10 The “romance” is nothing than what you’d find on Disney Channel My only word of caution would be that it deals with a heavy topic cancer So that might be a bit intense or upsetting for little ones or for anyone who’s been through a difficult death with cancer in their own lives OVERALL RATING 4 Stars If you’re a pre teen looking for a light hearted contemporary summertime read with similar vibes to Melody Carlson or Robin Jones Gunn you would probably enjoy Porch Swing Girl
