Many years ago I'd read De verborgen bron in secondary school and now I reread it because of a group read of the Netherlands Flanders group which starts tomorrow The group read by the way is not about De verborgen bron but about another one of Hella S Haasse’s fabulous books De ingewijden As the characters of De verborgen bron 1950 also appear in De ingewijden 1957 I thought I’d better reread De verborgen bron before joining the group read Jurjen Siebeling is staying at a hotel in the vicinity of a house his wife inherited from her maternal grandparents Jurjen is overworked and is recuperating on his own while his wife keeps working at the same laboratory Jurjen used to work in Having been given the keys to the place Jurjen goes to Breskel the for years uninhabited house on several occasions and slowly the story of the novel or novella if you like unfoldsThe novel is written in the form of a diary kept by Jurjen and from the beginning of the book the reader knows the diary is kept during the summer of 1937 All except for the last entry which is made a year later Doing the maths tells one that Rina Jurjen’s wife must be in her early thirties and judging from the story Jurjen must be around the same ageAll events in the novel are seen through Jurjen’s eyes of course as it is a fictional diary Jurjen goes through a period of self assessment during his time of recuperation and this self assessment made me wonder a couple of times just how accurate or reliable if you like Jurjen’s observations are He may write things down true to his own believes but are they like he thinks they are It is his description of his relation with Rina and Rina's character which made me wonder if he sees everything about Rina as it really is
