Kate convinced Allan to hire her for his detective agency She explained that she could worm out secrets where men could not go in disguis. A fun book that highlights a real woman's successful career the book struggled a little with clearly sharing the story I would have liked to see the story from Kate's point of view or maybe just a story about Pinkerton detectives it was a little hard for me and my 7 year old to get really invested in this story because it's still a tad clunky in the way the information is shared Nevertheless the story at its core is inspiring and a fun read particularly for upper elementary readers

I give this a 35 If you know me I list the VI Warshawski mystery series by Sara Paretsky as one of my favorite books In fact on friend reuests when people ask which fictional character would you most want to meet I often answer VI A brash female private investigator from Chicago who happens to love the Cubs Vic is one tough detective Long before Sara Paretsky dreamed up VI as her alter ego Kate Warne became the nation's first female detective for the Pinkerton Agency She was hired in 1856 which I find astonishing because this was only eight years after Seneca Falls and many years before suffrage was a major issue of the day Even amazing to me is that she was a widow and chose to work in a high profile job rather than remarrying Our story takes place in 1860 during Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration The book details how Warne helped foil a southern plot to assassinate Lincoln on his way to the Capitol Warne investigated the plot well and was lauded afterward leading to Pinkerton hiring many female detectives I lowered the rating on the book because even though it is a picture nonfiction book it seems geared toward the 7 11 year old age range Kids that age should have prior knowledge of Lincoln and basic knowledge of the Civil War This book while interesting using simplistic language that I feel a high first grade reader could handle so the subject matter and language do not match up I would recommend this to teachers and parents alike as I know from experience how hard it sometimes is to find uality books for kids It definitely leads to many discussion uestions and is perfect for a unit on Lincoln the Civil War or women's history month
