Wow ok I don't like to post negative reviews about books well no one does but this was just awfulThere unfortunately is nothing about this book that I enjoyed I'm not sure what I was thinking that this book was going be about but just not for me period I'm wondering where the author was trying to take this book Clearly Jonathan is battling his own demons with trying to understand his sexual desires for little girls No definitely not for me I was pretty disgusted the entire novel Thank you to Negalley for an advanced arc in exchange for an honest review

This novel is written by a Dutch criminal psychologist and I felt throughout that she was able to see clearly into the mind of a pedophile Her insight and clarity of observation make this a riveting readJonathon has been released from prison on a technicality The evidence against him was not sufficient for him to remain in jail He returns to the impoverished area where he resides with his mother and his dog He thinks ceaselessly about the work he's done with his psychologist while imprisoned and attempts to stay on course by doing the exercises in his workbook and using the coping strategies he was taught Though his crime is never directly states it becomes obvious early on that Jonathon is a pedophile and did something inappropriate to a girl who lived in his neighborhoodJonathon loves to fish and there is a place near his apartment where he goes to seek solace and peace He has an auarium in his room and wants to find the perfect fish for it He ends up capturing an injured tench scientific name of tinca tinca or 'doctor fish' The reason it had been called the doctor or physician fish was that people thought its skin and slime were medicinal and attributed healing powers to the fish Metaphorically this fish represents Jonathon's own healing He cares for the fish and tries to heal it just as he is trying to care for and heal himselfMeanwhile Jonathon meets a young neighbor girl who had been walking his dog while he was in jail Despite his internal alarms he likes to spend time with her and keeps telling himself it's a test one that he's passing because he is not harming her She is very interested in the fish and together they spend a lot of time feeding it weighing it and assessing its health The fate of the tench becomes closely linked to Jonathon's own health and well beingDespite his attempts to structure his time do his workbook assignments and stay hopeful he ends up spending and time with the girl He realizes he is becoming obsessed with her and wonders if he has the strength to be a different and better personThe novel is beautifully written and the nuances and subtleties of Jonathon's internal conflicts are well rendered The metaphor of the tench's life paralleling Jonathon's had me very intrigued I think that the translation can be improved upon in some ways but this is just a minor issue
